In an interview with Hillary Clinton, taped Friday to air today, Jimmy Fallon pulled out a surgical mask as he greeted Clinton in a nod to her recent health woes.
Fallon donned the mask to make light of recent concerns about Clinton’s health after she nearly collapsed at a 9/11 event and later announced that she was suffering from pneumonia.
In response, Clinton laughed at Fallon’s gesture and high-fived him, after which he made a show of putting on hand sanitizer.
Some viewers may see Fallon’s actions as unfair after he was criticized for going easy on Donald Trump when Fallon interviewed him a few days earlier, but Clinton gave no sign of discomfort during the interview.
Fallon later asked Clinton about whether it was challenging to appear both personable and authoritative as a female candidate for president.
“It’s so tricky because you have to go and you have to say hi to everybody and be happy, and you do,” Fallon said during the interview, according to NBC. “But also people kind of want to see this Hillary, which is the badass Hillary. ... They want to see someone who’s going to protect us and be strong and tough.”
“It’s especially tricky for women,” Clinton responded. “It just is. You don’t talk about ISIS with a big grin on your face. ... It’s a constant balancing act.”
Clinton’s health has been in question after numerous incidents where she appeared to be shaky, coughed for several minutes, or appeared otherwise ill, and after notable absences from the campaign trail and from various events.
