J.J. Abrams Trailer for 'Stranger' Thrills, But What Is It? (Video)

Filmmaker J.J. Abrams' mysterious new trailer will leave fans and moviegoers curious, which is likely just he what he hoped for with the clip titled "Stranger."

The clip, released Monday by Abrams' Bad Robot production company, already has more than a million hits on YouTube.

After a shot of a starry sky, the video shows a man washed up on a dark shore with what appear to be ropes around his wrists.

The voice on the video goes on to say, "He arrived knowing nothing of himself. Who is he? Soon he will know. Because what begins at the water shall end there. And what ends there shall once more begin. This is what happens: Men become lost; men vanish; men are erased – and reborn."

The creepy part comes when the trailer shows the face of the man and it appears that his lips have been sewn shut. The trailer ends with the words "Soon he will know," with the words fading one by one to reveal only the word "Soon."

Jessica Derschowitz of CBS News narrowed the mystery down to two upcoming Abrams' projects.

"Some are speculating that 'Stranger' could be a tease for 'Believe,' a new television project from Abrams and 'Children of Men' director Alfonso Cuaron," Derschowitz said on CBSNews.com. "Others think it could be tied to 'S.,' a new novel written by Doug Dorst in collaboration with Abrams that will be released in October."

Derschowitz made a strong pitch for the novel version of the mystery, adding, "The official description of "S." from its publisher, Mulholland Books, reads: 'At the core of this multilayered literary puzzle of love and adventure is a book of mysterious provenance. In the margins, another tale unfolds — through the hand-scribbled notes, questions, and confrontations of two readers. Between the pages, online, and in the real world, you'll find evidence of their interaction, ephemera that bring this tale vividly to life.' "

Jeff Jensen, of Entertainment Weekly's Pop Watch blog, came roughly to the same conclusion, adding it could also be teaser for a series for Warner Bros. based on the DC Comic superhero Phantom Stranger.

"I really, really, really want this to be true," Jensen said of Phantom Stranger.
