Joan Rivers is "resting comfortably" at a New York hospital after the comedy legend stopped breathing during a routine medical procedure on Thursday.

The 81-year-old comedienne reportedly went into cardiac and respiratory arrest during an endoscopic throat surgery and had to be rushed from a New York City medical clinic to Mount Sinai Hospital, CNN reported.

"This morning, Joan Rivers was taken to The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she is being attended to," hospital representative Sid Dinsay said in a statement Thursday. "Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available."

Rivers' daughter Melissa, 46, and grandson Cooper, 13, flew to New York City Thursday night to be at the "Fashion Police" star's bedside, according to E! Online.

"I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother," Melissa Rivers said in a statement. "She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers."

Rivers is reportedly in stable but critical condition at the hospital. Reports that the star is in a medically induced coma have not been verified.

Sources told E! Online that doctors at the medical clinic had been using a scope to look at Rivers' vocal chords when she stopped breathing. She was reportedly under sedation at the time, though it's not clear what kind of medication it was.

Known for her notoriously busy schedule, Rivers performed Wednesday night in Manhattan just hours before her surgery on Thursday.

Plenty of celebrities took to social media to show their support for Rivers and wish her the best as she recovers.
