John Caparulo, a comedian best known for appearances on "Chelsea Lately," was attacked at a California comedy club after he told a joke about President Donald Trump, TMZ reported on Wednesday.
The incident happened at The Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach when Caparulo launched into a profanity-laced joke about Trump and the Washington Monument, according to the celebrity gossip site, which posted a video of the incident.
A woman in the audience appeared to angrily shout at him before leaving, and someone eventually threw a glass at Caparulo, hitting the comedian.
The incident left the comedian searching for something to say.
"Right now, I've still got to do comedy," Caparulo said to an apparently supportive audience. "Like have you been to a family reunion and your uncle curses out your grandma; and someone's like 'Who wants cake?' I have to be the guy (who says) 'Who wants cake?'"
Caparulo may come face-to-face with Trump supporters again soon, as the comedian is scheduled to open his upcoming tour in two states the president won in last year's election. According to Caparulo's website, the comedian opens in Milwaukee on March 10, Green Bay on March 11, and will perform in Columbus, Ohio, March 24, 25, and 26.
The reaction to Caparulo's attack on social media has been mixed.
According to Caparulo's Twitter account, he appeared at the comedy club Feb. 21.
