John Kerry 'Sweet Adelaide' Gaffe Prompts Twitter Mocks (Video)

Despite having served as a Massachusetts senator for almost 30 years, Secretary of State John Kerry made a major gaffe on Thursday when he botched the name of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," the anthem played at every Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park.

Kerry called the song "Sweet Adeline" while testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (video below). He was attempting to praise the New York Yankees for showing support for the Boston by playing the song during a home game Tuesday night.

Twitter instantly erupted over the blunder, even bestowing a new hash tag — #JohnKerryLyrics — for other song titles and lyrics Kerry would surely flub.

Kerry admitted to the mistake, according to a reporter for BuzzFeed Politics.

Kerry ADMITS GAFFE: "I meant Sweet Caroline. I want to make sure everybody knows I can sing Sweet Caroline, but I ain't singing it now."

This wasn’t the first time Kerry has messed up a Red Sox sports reference.

When asked to name his favorite player on the 2004 Red Sox, Kerry responded, "Manny Ortez," a mixture of ball players Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz (whose name is pronounced with a long "E").

Kerry also once named Eddie Yost as his favorite player in Boston Red Sox history. Yost played 18 years in the majors, but never for the Red Sox.

Kerry also infamously ordered a Philly cheesesteak with Swiss cheese during a visit to Pat's King of Steaks in Philadelphia in 2003, a no-no in cheesesteak etiquette.
