Sen. John McCain was in stable condition after being released from hospital last week following surgery, but a cryptic tweet from his son-in-law has many bracing themselves in the wake of his aggressive brain cancer, USA Today noted.

Conservative pundit Ben Domenech noted that the six-term Arizona Republican asked him to look after his daughter during a heartfelt moment over the weekend.

"John hugged me tonight. He asked me to take care of Meghan. I said I would," Domenech said in a tweet that has since been deleted.

John McCain was diagnosed last year with glioblastoma, a deadly form of brain cancer, and was admitted into hospital to undergo surgery last week to treat an intestinal infection, Time reported.

The senator has been receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatment while regularly attending Congress but since December, he has been laying low and recovering at his home in Arizona.

John McCain's family have remained largely upbeat and positive about his treatment and health.

"As anyone knows whose family has battled cancer or any significant disease that oftentimes there are side effects of treatment that you have," Domenech said on CBS News' "Face the Nation" recently.

However, he added that John McCain remained "one of the toughest men on the face of the Earth, as you know."

Meanwhile Meghan McCain has opened up about her father's diagnoses on ABC's "The View."

"[My father] really is the most resilient man in the world," she said.

"He was fine when he was diagnosed. I mean, he was like, 'I fought tougher battles than this. We're going to hit this like we do everything else,'" she said. "I was a mess. My mother was very strong. My father was very strong. My siblings were very strong, and I was just a complete mess."

Meghan McCain said she was hopeful that her father would make a return to Washington by the summer, CBS News noted.
