John Oliver is leaving "The Daily Show" for his own show on HBO, but his last night as a correspondent for Jon Stewart held more tears than laughs on Thursday.
The British comedian came on stage for what he thought was a comedy bit on the phone-hacking scandal involving the British royal family. But Stewart quickly dropped the rse and let Oliver know that he was the "only British royal I care about tonight."

Oliver was then presented with a video montage of his finest moments from his 7 1/2-year stint on the late-night comedy news program, including clips of Oliver making dirty jokes and lewd comments and gestures.
When cameras came back to Oliver, he was visibly emotional during a standing ovation.
The 36-year-old subbed for Stewart as show host this summer while Stewart was directing a movie, and the show's ratings remained high which led to his HBO show, scheduled to air on Sunday nights beginning in 2014. "Daily Show" writer Tom Carvell is producing Oliver's new show.
Oliver and Stewart shared a big hug before dancing together to Mystikal's "Danger," the song Oliver danced to during summer coverage of Anthony "Carlos Danger" Weiner. Even during that, Oliver struggled to keep his composure.
Stewart, 51, ended the show with a "moment of zen" that featured Oliver dancing to a sing-along of the "Daily Show" theme.
Oliver joins other "Daily Show" alumni Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert who have branched out to major success. Carell starred for many seasons on NBC's "The Office" and is currently in "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." Colbert is the Emmy-winning host of "The Colbert Report," which follows "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central.
