John Travolta: Jett's Loss Was the 'Worst Thing That Ever Happened'

John Travolta recently said during an interview in London that he is missing his late son Jett, who died five years ago while Travolta’s family was on vacation in the Bahamas.

"The truth is, I didn't know if I was going to make it," Travolta said during the on-stage interview at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the BBC reported. "Life was no longer interesting to me, so it took a lot to get me better."

Travolta described his son’s death as the “worst thing that ever happened in my life.”

Jett Travolta, who was the oldest son of John Travolta and actress Kelly Preston, died after suffering a seizure in January 2009. He also was autistic. The couple has two other children — Ella, 13, and Benjamin, 3.

Travolta said members of the Church of Scientology helped him work through the issues related to Jett’s death. He said it was often difficult to wake up after the tragedy.

"They didn't take a day off, working through different angles of the techniques to get through grief and loss, and to make me feel that finally I could get through a day," Travolta said during the interview.

Following their son’s death, the Travoltas set up The Jett Travolta Foundation, a Glendale, Calif.-based tax-exempt organization designed to support “charitable, literary and educational purposes.”

According to the foundation’s website, “some of the Foundation’s specific objectives are to use its resources to assist and provide relief to children with vision, hearing, mobility, communication, behavior learning impairments or other special medical, environmental, health or educational needs.”

The foundation also makes grants to educate the public about the environment, provide relief and assistance to children who are victims of natural or man-made disasters, and grief counseling related to the loss of a family member.

As of the end of 2013, The Jett Travolta Foundation donated money to nearly 70 organizations.

Travolta has long been known for his iconic roles in "Saturday Night Fever," "Grease," and "Pulp Fiction." He also played the lovable but dim-witted Vinnie Barbarino on the 1970’s show "Welcome Back, Kotter."

Travolta and Kelly Preston have been married since 1991.
