Johnny Depp's portrayal of Donald Trump in a fictitious "The Art of the Deal" movie posted on the
Funny or Die website on Wednesday already has been viewed more than 1.8 million times.
With an introduction by Ron Howard, Depp dons blond hair and a pudgier look in portraying the leading Republican presidential candidate in the spoof made to look like a made-for-television movie from the 1980s.
"Howard explains he found the videotape — produced, directed and starring The Donald — at a yard sale in Phoenix," said
USA Today in a review of the spoof. "To get it, he had to wrestle it from a woman named Ginny.
"What follows is a pitch-perfect imitation of Trump by Johnny Depp — who you will not recognize in his fat suit and wig — in a six-chapter parody of the presidential candidate. It also features a list of well-known actors having a lot of fun."
The Funny or Die movie is directed by Jeremy Konner and also stars Patton Oswalt as Merv Griffin, Jack McBrayer as Trump architect Der Scutt, Alfred Molina as Jerry Schrager, Henry Winkler as former New York City mayor Ed Koch, and Michaela Watkins as Ivana Trump, reported
Variety.
"Donald Trump has it all. Money, power, respect, and an Eastern European bride," says the Funny or Die website. "But all his success didn't come for nothing. First, he inherited millions of dollars from his rich father, then he grabbed New York City by the balls."
Funny or Die editor-in-chief Owen Burke told the
New York Times that the idea of the spoof came up in September, but he thought they would have a limited time to work on the project.
"The plan was to move really fast because we thought Trump would go away, as least as a presidential candidate," said Burke. "When he bizarrely didn't go away, we had a little more time. But that meant keeping the secret for longer."
Social media had varying opinions of the video.
