Actor Johnny Depp is making light of missing a press conference in Tokyo by joking that he was attacked by a mythical creature.

"I was attacked yesterday morning by a very rarely seen or experienced animal called 'chupacabra.' I fought with it for hours. They're very persistent, very mean. And I'm pretty sure it came into my suitcase. I threw him off the 23rd floor. So we'll never see him again. Thank you for understanding," Depp said, according to The Associated Press.

Depp was scheduled to appear at a press conference on Tuesday, but didn’t show up because he was unwell, keeping more than 200 journalists waiting before the event was canceled.

His latest film, "Mortdecai," will be released in Japan on Feb. 6. The film made $4.1 million in North America and $5.2 million elsewhere last weekend, the AP said.

The film is Depp’s fifth consecutive box-office flop. Coming sequels to “Alice in Wonderland” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” could hold more promise.
