Quarterback Johnny Manziel failed to interest the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats in signing him after working out with the team in Buffalo last week.
Manziel wants to get back into pro football after being waived by the Cleveland Browns in March 2016, but the Canadian Football League's Tiger-Cats staff said he had “too many red flags” for them to sign him right now, CBS Sports reported.
After a series of physical and medical tests, the team said they weren’t convinced Manziel was in good enough shape to play at their level and that his off-field regimen didn’t seem to indicate he was dedicated to playing pro football.
Manziel was a first-round pick for the Browns in 2014 but he demonstrated inconsistency on the field and reckless behavior away from it. In his two years with the Browns, he had as many interceptions as touchdowns (seven each) and ended up with a 74.4 passer rating in eight games of starting.
Manziel allegedly assaulted his then-girlfriend Colleen Crowley and settled the domestic violence case out of court, and since leaving the NFL, he has spent a lot of time partying, CBS noted.
The Tiger-Cats weren’t completely disinterested in Manziel and placed him on their negotiations list as one of 35 players their team has exclusive rights to negotiate a contract with. Other players on their list are Robert Griffin III and Colin Kaepernick, USA Today reported.
The Tiger-Cats have lost their first eight games this season and just promoted June Jones of Southern Methodist University, the University of Hawaii, and the NFL, to head coach. Current quarterback Zach Collaros is the highest-paid player in the league but has an 81 passer rating, which is near the bottom of the CFL.
