Johnny Manziel used an Instagram post from a Mexican resort to sneer at his dad who has publicly expressed concern about his "druggie" son.
The troubled NFL quarterback, a Heisman Trophy winner who hasn't been signed by a club since being cut by the Cleveland Browns in March, posted the photo from Cabo San Lucas and added the hashtag #hiDad in reference to his father Paul Manziel who told
ESPN he was concerned about his son's partying and alleged drug use, reported
Sports Illustrated.
"It's not a secret that he's a druggie," Paul Manziel told ESPN last week. "I don't know what to say, other than my son is a druggie and he needs help. He just hasn't (sought) it yet. Hopefully he doesn't die before he comes to his senses. That's about all you can say. I don't know what else to say."
Paul Manziel also told ESPN that he checked the quarterback into a rehab clinic earlier this year but he "escaped."
Manziel told
TMZ on Wednesday that he was planning on salvaging his NFL career and going sober -- starting Friday.
"Manziel is staying in the insanely expensive Cabo mansion with 20 people, not all of whom he knows," said TMZ. "For his part, Manziel tells TMZ Sports he's not doing any drugs in Mexico and says he's going completely sober starting July 1st ... no booze, eating right and training like crazy."
"Manziel has said he's determined to make a comeback to the NFL – and tells us he's finally ready to get back to work … right after one last turn up."
Getting clean is just one of the hurdles he faces in trying to get back into the NFL. Manziel is currently facing misdemeanor assault charges in Texas for allegedly rupturing the eardrum of former girlfriend Colleen Crowley in January, noted ESPN.
One of Manziel's attorneys, Bob Hinton, quit this week after inadvertently sending a text message to The Associated Press saying the quarterback was seeking a plea deal in the case, reported the
Dallas Morning News.
In the text message, Hinton expressed his doubts about Manziel's ability to stay clean and said he was given a receipt showing the quarterback may have spent more than $1,000 at a drug paraphernalia store shortly after he was involved in a hit-and-run crash, said the Morning News.
Manziel told police earlier this month that his 2015 Nissan GTR was t-boned in a hit-and-run wreck, reported the
AP.
The
Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot described Manziel's two seasons with the Browns as being "characterized by excessive partying, false promises, lies, offensive photos and videos, a 10-week stay in rehab, possible domestic violence charges and very little production on the football field."
