Jon Stewart blasted the GOP during an appearance on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" that was broadcast live after Donald Trump's speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday.
The New York Times published a full transcript of the segment, saying Stewart returned to the show "to breathe fire, in a vehement comic monologue about the 2016 presidential race, the hypocrisies of the news media and his old nemeses at Fox News."
Making a comparison to Olympic gymnastics, Stewart railed about the contortions that conservatives have undergone to embrace the same characteristics in Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump that they have claimed to hate in President Obama.
He showed a montage of clips of Fox News personalities calling Obama divisive, thin-skinned, authoritarian and narcissistic. Throughout the segment, Stewart criticized Fox News host Sean Hannity, whom he referred to as "Lumpy."
"Either Lumpy and his friends are lying about being bothered by thin-skinned, authoritarian, less-than-Christian readers-of-prompter being president. Or they don’t care, as long as it’s their thin-skinned prompter-authoritarian-tyrant-narcissist," Stewart said. "You just want that person to give you your country back. Because you feel that you’re this country’s rightful owners. There’s only one problem with that. This country isn’t yours. You don’t own it."
Stewart's performance was among many late-night talk show sketches to devote shows on Thursday to the Republican National Convention,
Fortune noted.
Trevor Noah, Stewart's successor on "The Daily Show," announced, "It’s officially official, people. Donald Trump just accepted the Republican nomination for president. And so I urge you to live every day like it’s your last."
