Joni Mitchell in Intensive Care, Found Unconscious at Home

Singer Joni Mitchell is in intensive care at a Los Angeles hospital after the 71-year-old multi-Grammy winner and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was found unresponsive in her Bel-Air neighborhood home on Tuesday.

"Joni was found unconscious in her home this afternoon," said a statement on her website. "She regained consciousness on the ambulance ride to an L.A. area hospital. She is currently in intensive care undergoing tests and is awake and in good spirits."

A later post added: "Joni has been hospitalized. We are awaiting official word on her condition and will post it here as soon as we know."

Mitchell and her music emerged from the Laurel Canyon music scene with the likes of the Doors, Neil Young; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Carole King; the Eagles and the Mamas and the Papas during the 1960s, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Billboard magazine reported in December that Mitchell had cut back her traveling because of Morgellons Disease, a skin condition she has suffered for years and which makes plane travel difficult.

Mitchell told the magazine the disease made it nearly impossible for her to sing, perform or record. The eight-time Grammy-winner, though, told Billboard that she still painted, revisited her past music and has prepped a four-act ballet.

The Times noted that Mitchell was awarded Billboard's Century Award, the publication's highest honor for creative achievement, in 1995 "to acknowledge the uncommon excellence of a still-unfolding body of work." She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Mitchell said in the Billboard interview that she listens to the radio to stay in touch with the day's music scene but did not find much of it inspiring. She said the sounds of legendary greats like Duke Ellington and Miles Davis were "forever new."

"There are some things that are magnificent that are always new, it doesn't matter when they were made," said Mitchell. "I just don't see much that's made that isn't derivative. There's no Charlie Parkers, nobody coming out of the blue."
