"Avengers" director Joss Whedon has created a new pro-Hillary Clinton super PAC to encourage people to register and vote in the upcoming election.
Whedon has assembled an all-star cast including many “Avengers” actors in a new video in which Don Cheadle calls Donald Trump “a racist, abusive coward who could permanently damage the fabric of our society.”
The video, the first of a planned 15 to 25 that will air before the presidential election on Nov. 8, is intended as a spoof of previous PSAs that encouraged people to register to vote, Slate reported. The video injects comedy into the very serious subject, including a pledge made on behalf of Mark Ruffalo to do a nude scene in his next movie (much to Ruffalo’s chagrin).
Whedon created the super PAC with his own $1 million donation in support of Clinton, and has taken time off from script writing to work on Save the Day full time.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon's team includes executive director Ben Sheehan (“Funny or Die”) and Carri Twigg, who worked for Vice President Joe Biden in his office of public engagement.
“It’s not about attacking because Donny’s real good at attacking himself,” Whedon told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s about getting people to vote, because it’s frightening the apathy that people are treating the most crucial election of their lifetimes with.”
While Whedon hopes to capitalize on stars such as Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and Neil Patrick Harris to get out the vote for Hillary, Claremont McKenna College professor of American politics John Pitney Jr. is skeptical. “Big names get attention, but it is not clear that they have much impact on turnout rates,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “Clever writing and eye-catching graphics do not get people to the polls. What really matters is whether people believe that they have a stake in the outcome.”
