'Wizard of Oz' Ruby Slippers to Be Auctioned

Tuesday, 27 September 2011 03:00 PM EDT

A pair of the iconic red ruby slipper worn by Judy Garland on-screen in the “Wizard of Oz” is scheduled to be auctioned Dec. 16 in Los Angeles, reports ABC News

The slippers are part of a Hollywood memorabilia sale and expect to be sold for $2-3 million dollars.

Described as being “in mint condition” by representatives from the Profiles in History auction house, the slippers are marked with “#7 Judy Garland” on the inside and the leather soles are painted red.

The slippers may have been used during close-ups of Garland as Dorothy kicking her heels together and saying “There’s no place like home.”  The auction house has also suggested that the shoes may have been worn by the Wicked Witch of the East during the scene where she was crushed underneath Dorothy’s house.

There are only four pairs of slippers, including the one up for action, remaining from the original film. The Smithsonian Museum in Washington houses one pair, another is privately owned, and the third was stolen from the Judy Garland museum.
