Julia Louis-Dreyfus's cancer treatment has halted "Veep" production for its seventh and final season, executive director Frank Rich told SiriusXM "Press Pool" on Wednesday.
"Veep" and Louis-Dreyfus have both won Primetime Emmy Awards for the HBO comedy series about the first female vice president. The actress, the former costar of "Seinfeld," announced in September on social media that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
"We're obviously postponing production of the show – we were supposed to have started now – while she's in treatment," Rich told "Press Pool." "The expectation is that we will shoot again. We have one more season we're doing, which we're incredibly excited about."
Rich pointed out that despite the intensity of the treatment, Louis-Dreyfus wanted to soldier on and keep working during chemotherapy treatment, per "Press Pool."
"Rather impressively, while we wait for her to gather her full strength around her treatment, we've been having with the cast in Los Angeles table reads of scripts for the final season as they’re ready," Rich told "Press Pool."
"It's been quite something because she's fighting a serious, what is for anybody, a real illness. And yet, wants to keep working as much as circumstances allow without being crazy about it," Rich continued.
The actress's cancer announcement came shortly after Louis-Dreyfus set a record for the most Emmys won by a performer for a single role – her sixth – portraying Selina Meyer in "Veep," CNN reported. She also won an Emmy in 2006 for the sitcom "The New Adventures of Old Christine," the broadcaster stated.
"Our love and support go out to Julia and her family at this time," HBO said in a statement after Louis-Dreyfus's announcement in September. "We have every confidence she will get through this with her usual tenacity and undaunted spirit, and look forward to her return to health and to HBO for the final season of 'Veep.'"
