Julia Roberts' Sister's Death a Suicide, Not an Overdose as Claimed

By    |   Friday, 16 May 2014 10:42 AM EDT

Julia Roberts' sister Nancy Motes died in February from suicide, not an accidental overdose, as Julia and the Roberts family told the media at the time.

"This is proof that Julia was manipulating the truth in terms of what happened," Motes' fiancé John Dilbeck told the New York Daily News after a coroner's report on her death was released.

"She persisted that this was just a drug overdose and that Nancy was a drug addict. I want everyone to know Nancy was not a drug addict. This verdict from the coroner is more proof of that," he said.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's statement on Motes, who was 37 years old, said she took her own life by ingesting "multiple drugs," climbing into a bathtub of a business client, and drowning. The full report is expected to be released in the coming weeks naming the drugs specifically.

Motes also apparently left a suicide note detailing her troubled relationship with half-sister Roberts.

Motes, a dog walker and production assistant for "Glee," and Dilbeck were scheduled to get married this year, however Roberts apparently refused to attend the wedding. This came after Motes reported that she had been bullied her whole life by Roberts, who even bullied her into getting gastric bypass surgery to lose weight.

"When I was in high school and she was an adult, she would just let me know that I was definitely overweight," Motes said previously.

After Motes' suicide, Dilbeck said he wasn't even invited to his fiancée's funeral.

"It's devastating. She was the love of my life, and this would have been our wedding month," he said. "I’m still suffering and in mourning, and this is one of the worst nightmares anyone can imagine."

Just weeks before her suicide, Motes took to Twitter to rant about her older sister, writing "my own family has abandoned me."

The Daily Mail reports that Roberts moved her mother, Betty Lou Motes, into her Malibu mansion following the death of her sister.
