"Jurassic World" had the largest worldwide box office sales of any single movie opening ever this past weekend.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Jurassic Park" sequel became the first movie to ever gross more than half a billion dollars in a single weekend as it raked in $511.8 million globally.
"This is absolutely a four-quadrant movie and is working on so many levels," said Universal domestic distribution chief Nick Carpou, referring to four coveted marketing demographics that don't often overlap: male, female, over 25, and under 25.
"The release date was awesome, and everybody stayed off of our date," he added, referring to the movie's box-office competition.
The previous record holder for largest global haul was "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which earned $483.2 million in 2011.
Domestically, "Jurassic World" grossed $204.6 million across North America — just short of "The Avengers'" record $207.4-million weekend in 2012.
Notably, roughly half of the box office sales were comprised of tickets for the 3-D version of the film, which also set a new record for IMAX ticket sales globally.
"Jurassic World" launched 22 years after the Steven Spielberg-directed "Jurassic Park," and stars relative newcomer Chris Pratt in his second blowout hit after "Guardians of the Galaxy."
