Justin Bieber lost 3.5 million Instagram followers in what’s being called the “Instagram Rapture,” a move by the social media network to get rid of spam or fake accounts.
Web developer Zach Allia (@zachallia) compiled the
data on who lost the most Instagram followers after the purge, and it turns out Bieber and Kim Kardashian topped the list.
Kardashian lost 1.3 million followers out of the 23.5 million she had before Instagram dumped the spam accounts, which amounted to about 5.5 percent of her followers, the data found. Bieber was hit harder with a loss of 14.8 percent of his followers.
Third on the list was Beyonce, who lost 1.5 million followers, or 7 percent, Allia said.
The crackdown on those fake Instagram accounts irked many users and complaints were loud and long this week as the numbers dropped. Rapper Mase reportedly fell from 1.6 million followers to 100,000 in 20 minutes, and he deleted his account altogether.
"This Instagram bloodbath is hilarious,"
Josh "The Fat Jew" Ostrovsky, an Instagrammer with 2.2 million followers, told The Business Insider. "This should be a national holiday. We all know who bought followers, so today just corroborated everyone's suspicions. So many people losing their followers, watching their digital worlds crumble. Today is so fun."
Others showed their anger and/or humor on other social media sites.
