Justin Cox was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday after the news of his arrest for burglary of a residence, aggravated domestic assault, and trespassing became public.

Cox, 22, who attended Mississippi State University, had gone undrafted before signing on with the Chiefs as a free agent during this offseason, according to Bleacher Report. But it only took a few hours for the Chiefs to announce that Cox would not be on the team’s official roster following his arrest and the charges leveled against him.

The incident occurred on Monday at the Aspen Heights apartment complex when authorities received a call around 1 p.m. and Cox was deemed to be a suspect, according to The Clarion-Ledger. He was arrested in West Point before being transferred back to Starkville where he was booked at 4 p.m.

This arrest, however, was not Cox’s first run-in with the law. Mississippi State suspended Cox from playing in MSU’s final three football games, including the Orange Bowl, after he was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic violence and burglary of a dwelling last November, according to The Clarion-Ledger. Cox played in 21 games with the Bulldogs for MSU during his two years with Mississippi State.

As a rookie defensive back, Cox still had a very good chance of possibly making the final roster for the Chiefs as the team sought more depth for both the cornerback and the safety – despite the red flag from his first arrest, according to Bleacher Report. Cox impressed scouts with his 4.36-second 40-yard dash, even though he was not ultimately selected during the NFL draft in May, according to The Clarion-Ledger.

But now with this second arrest and a new set of charges, it seems highly unlikely that Cox will have the full chance to redeem himself and make an NFL roster in the future.
