Did Kanye West’s admiring tweets and Donald Trump's that's "cool" reply cost the rapper nine million Twitter followers? That’s the burning question after the bottom started to fall out of Mr. K’s fan base within minutes of posting about his “love” for the president.
Twitter insisted the “missing” fans were still following Kim Kardashian's hubby and that the social media platform was just experiencing inconsistencies, Page Six reported.
It began on Wednesday when West fired off a series of tweets declaring his support for Trump, prompting criticism from fans, USA Today reported. Eyebrows went up farther with rumors that West’s antics were costing him fans.
In one post, West said: “You don't have to agree with trump but the mob can't make me not love him. We are both dragon energy. He is my brother.”
The rapper’s counter, which originally featured almost 28 million followers on Twitter, dropped to 18.7 million, Page Six reported, after the post was retweeted by Trump, who added “Thank you Kanye, very cool!”
A Twitter spokesperson told The Verge, though, that reports of West losing fans were false.
“We can confirm that Kanye’s follower count is currently at approximately 27M followers. Any fluctuation that people might be seeing is an inconsistency and should be resolved soon,” a statement read.
Trump’s retweet sparked debate among social media users and fueled at least a few memes.
