Katey Sagal, the actress whose name was once synonymous with the tacky, big-haired redhead Peg Bundy on the TV sitcom "Married with Children," has had a television makeover and reinvention as the cunning, ruthless biker mom Gemma Teller in the FX series "Sons of Anarchy."
In a recent interview with Billboard magazine, Sagal discussed her transition from the mother of a dysfunctional suburban TV family 25 years ago to the matriarch of a fictional biker gang today.
"Now, it's more about Gemma. I did used to get it all the time, but no so much anymore," Sagal said referring to her former association with the Peggy Bundy character with regards to whom she is most identified with today in the public.

"Sons of Anarchy" centers around a tight-knit outlaw motorcycle club located in a fictional Central Valley California town. Sagal's character is married to the biker gang's president Clay Morrow, played by veteran actor Ron Perlman.
In real life, Sagal is married to "Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter.
During the interview, Sagal fiercely defended the show, which has come under criticism by some for its violent, at times dark, subject matter.
"I believe that as violent as the show tends to be, and gritty as it tends to be, it's also got a lot of heart," Sagal told Billboard. "It's about a group of outsiders. I think that anarchists are trying to make their way going against the grain. I think everybody has that side of them. I think it speaks to that. I think it's got a big ‘real people' following. Not only is it entertainment, but people invest in it."
In addition to her role on the series, Sagal also sings one song per season that is featured the show's soundtrack, allowing the 59-year-old actress to pursue her other passion, having once been a backup singer to Bob Dylan.
"Every season I sing at least one song in the soundtrack," Sagal told Billboard. "My husband, who writes the show, and Bob, who does the music, came up with great covers for me to do. I was on that track, doing covers on the show, so I thought I would continue that. It's been great."
"I've been playing these gigs around, and there's a really great response," Sagal added. "It's not what I thought would happen, but it's kind of like everything in my life—that seems to be the pattern. I just have to keep getting out of the way, and stuff just happens."
Some of what she considers to be her most inspirational songs have been included on
Sagal's very own album, titled "Covered," which will be released this week, E! Online reported.
