Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper's friendship is over, the controversial comedian said.
Griffin and the CNN anchor had been friends for 17 years and co-anchored CNN's popular New Year's Eve program together since 2007. Griffin was fired from CNN in May after she posed for pictures where she held up a bloody severed head resembling President Donald Trump.
After the incident, Cooper spoke out strongly against it in a Twitter post.
Griffin told New York magazine's The Cut that while she understood Cooper's position, she felt their friendship deserved at least a phone call to her before going public. The comedian said she was further upset that while other CNN colleagues called to offer private support in the days afterwards, Cooper did not reach out until Aug. 10.
The magazine pointed out, though, that Cooper claimed that they were friends during a July 26 episode of "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen."
"Yeah, we're still friends, and look I said what I said about — I didn't think what she said was appropriate, but I wish her the best and I hope she bounces back," Cooper said on the show then.
Griffin told The Cut when Cooper did reach out in August via text, she informed him that their friendship was done.
The photo incident cost her several shows and she told The Cut she is now concerned for her own personal safety but is working to relaunch her career.
Griffin issued a video apology after the controversy, acknowledging that it "went too far."
