Actress Katie Holmes is opening up about the aftermath of her very public split with Tom Cruise. In a candid interview, the "Dawson's Creek" star revealed how "intense" it was being in the limelight during that painful time in 2012 and still having to look after her daughter, Suri, who she shares with Cruise.
"That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it," Holmes told InStyle in an interview that appears in the magazine's latest edition.
Holmes chose to find a new life for herself and Suri in Manhattan. It was a stressful move but there were happy moments interspersed between the drama, which Holmes recalled fondly.
"We were followed a lot when she was little. I just wanted her outside, so I would walk her around to find parks at, like, six in the morning when nobody would see us," Holmes said of one particular incident. "But there’s one video where I’m holding her -- she was 2 at the time -- and she starts waving at the cameras. She’s pretty special."
Following the divorce, Holmes focused all her energy into raising Suri, a rewarding process that has seen the 13-year-old flourish.
"My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it. She came out very strong," Holmes continued, "she's always been a strong personality. She'll pick an activity and work her butt off until she's really good at it. Then she's like, 'OK, I'm going to try the next thing.' She's very focused and a hard worker."
Holmes has remained relatively quiet about her divorce from Cruise but in a separate interview admitted that she shed many tears after the split.
"I cry all the time. I do!," she said, according to Mirror, but added that she refused to let the experience "define her."
"I don't want that to be what I'm known as. I was an actor before, an actor during and an actor now," she said. "I don't have any fear now, I don't have a lot of rules for myself, and I don't take myself that seriously."
