Katy Perry’s latest album “Prism” came out Tuesday and the singer said just one song was a commentary on her breakup with Russell Brand.
In “By the Grace of God,”
Perry sings of crying after the divorce, and she’s open with Entertainment Weekly about those lyrics.

“Well, imagine what you go through,” she told the magazine. “Imagine what happens when you go through a breakup. We all go through breakups and we all get very depressed and desperate. The lyrics are very exact and autobiographical. That’s how I write. But the one thing about those lyrics is you can hear me finding my strength throughout the song. It starts off really low and then I kind of stand up for myself and say, ‘No!’”
Most of the album’s songs are more full of joy than that one, and it’s the only one on “Prism” that was divorce influenced, Perry told EW. Her new single “Unconditionally,” in fact, was impacted by Joy Mayer, whom she’s currently dating.
Perry’s last album spun out five No. 1 hits and “Prism” looks to be on the right track. It’s already notched a No. 1 with “Roar,” EW said.
Perry said all the songs are born from different places in her life.
“I don’t feel like I want every song to come with a little package, a little tabloid-al package because it’s like, ‘Why don’t you let the song be a little unspecific to the listener?’ Then the listener can use it and relate to it in their own way,” she told EW.
A
Washington Post review of “Prism” latched onto “By the Grace of God” as the one song on the album that lived up to Perry’s stated view that she’d like to age into a Joni Mitchell style.
Other songs on the album lend a spiritual quality, like “the type of one-size-fits-all spiritual catchphrases of someone who once read a self-help book in an airport,” wrote Post reporter Allison Stewart.
And yet others offer up Perry’s trademark “confections” that Stewart called “fluffball romps.”
