Keke Palmer, basking in the glow of her Broadway debut as the first
African-American to play Cinderella, told Essence magazine she is still upset about the nude photos of her that were hacked and made public in October.
Palmer, 21, was among a long list of celebrities who had their private images exposed on the Internet website The Fappening two months ago. In an interview for its January issue, Essence sat down with Palmer to talk about the scandal.
"People think they can just put their hands in everything and it's like, 'No, no, no,'" she said. "The fact that so many celebrity pictures were out there and everybody is elating in the fact that they're a Peeping Tom? You're all Peeping Toms. Everybody that's commenting. In real life, if anybody went to somebody's house and looked at them naked, they would go to jail."
Palmer also dished on her transition from child star (she starred in 2006's "Akeelah and the Bee" at age 10) to serious actress.
"People write on my Instagram page: 'Don’t be like Miley Cyrus.'" she told Essence. "I don't even know what that means. I'm my own person. You want me to stay with a brand that I've outgrown? I'm 21."
She also offered up her thoughts on playing the first black Cinderella on Broadway.
"I know that the role of Cinderella is primarily for a Caucasian girl, but it didn't stop me from going in and it didn't stop them from seeing me," Palmer said. "There is a bit of intimidation. You think about Denzel [Washington], Viola Davis, and you think, 'Only great people can do Broadway.' That was the scariest thing about it, but I'm the type who thrives on pressure."
