By    |   Monday, 06 April 2015 07:46 AM EDT

Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire accepted the resignation of top aide David Wihby after he was arrested during a prostitution sting.

According to Politico, Wihby, 62, was hired by Ayotte in March 2014 as state director, and, according to the most recent data available, was paid $60,000 from April to September.

"I am shocked and deeply saddened that David Wihby, my state director and a friend for many years, has been arrested under these circumstances," the senator said in a statement. "David obviously cannot continue his duties, and I have accepted his resignation. This is a very difficult time, and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved."

Ayotte was arrested Friday night in Nashua, New Hampshire, after allegedly arranging a meeting with a call girl on a website named Backpage. The ads placed by the department's Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) unit after getting complaints from hotels that suspected prostitution was happening on their grounds.

"There would be a talk about exchange of money for sexual acts and upon having that done where there was an agreement between the two of them, the individual would be placed under arrest," Nashua police Capt. Denis Linehan explained to ABC affiliate WMUR.

Whiby was released on $2,000 personal recognizance. He and 9 other men arrested during the sting are expected to be charged with misdemeanors.

He serves as the vice chairman of the Manchester School Committee, and was a Manchester alderman for 18 years.
