KFC will test an edible coffee cup at British locations later this year, parent company Yum Brands announced this week.
USA Today reported that the new "Scoff-ee Cup" was developed in conjunction with the Robin Collective, a London-based food science specialist, and will debut when KFC begins serving Seattle's Best Coffee, a Starbucks company.
The cup is said to be made of "wafer coated in sugar paper and lined with a heat-resistant white chocolate,"
according to The New York Times.
Brandy Wright, a designer at Robin Collective, said in a statement that the cups come with three ambient aromas: "Coconut Sun Cream," "Freshly Cut Grass," and "Wild Flowers."
"We have been experimenting with edible packaging to see if it could be a feasible product to bring to market in limited quantities," said KFC spokeswoman Jocelyn Bynoe. "If our customers occasionally like to have their cake and eat it, why wouldn't they want to have their cup and eat it, instead?"
In recent years, a number of companies have been turning toward more recyclable food and drink packaging in an effort to be more environmentally friendly, and some say that edible packaging could be the next green innovation.
Notable examples of edible vessels include Italian coffee brand Lavazza and New York's Dominique Ansel Bakery, both of which have developed cookie cups.
