Legendary rapper Kidd Creole was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder in the stabbing death of a homeless man with whom he allegedly argued on the street.
Kidd Creole, 57, whose real name is Nathaniel Glover, apparently thought the man, who was a convicted sex offender, was hitting on him just before the stabbing, the New York Daily News reported. Glover worked as a security guard and handyman near the scene of the stabbing and was reportedly on his way to work when the incident occurred.
The victim, 55-year-old John Jolly, was reportedly drunk and said something to Glover, who responded and an argument ensued.
“It was some sort of diss,” a police source told the Daily News.
After Jolly collapsed, he was found on the street by passersby who called 911, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital where he was taken by paramedics.
Glover was identified from surveillance camera footage near the scene. He was charged with second-degree murder and is being held pending arraignment, The New York Times reported. It wasn’t clear whether Glover had retained an attorney.
Glover was part of the pioneering rap group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in the 1970s and '80s. The group's song "The Message" was ranked the 52nd greatest song of all time and the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, the first rap group to be inducted.
Some on Twitter referenced lyrics from Glover's '80s hit for why he might have committed the crime.
