Rapper Killer Mike apologized Sunday for his NRA interview that aired at the same time March for Our Lives was taking place Saturday around the country, saying the interview was misused.
In the interview with NRATV host Colion Noir, which was recorded a week before the marches, Mike talked about arming his daughter, a college student at Savannah State University where there was a shooting last year, and making sure she was trained to use a gun.
Mike later said in a statement the interview was intended to support black gun ownership, not be “a weapon” against the marches, which he also supported.
"That interview was used a week later to disparage a very noble campaign that I actually support. ... I want to say first I’m sorry guys, I do support the March — and I support black people owning guns. It’s possible to do both," Mike said, NPR reported.
Killer Mike has been involved in politics since he broke out onto the music scene in 2012, strongly supporting Bernie Sanders in the last election and using his music to talk about institutionalized racism.
Mike criticized National School Walkout Day, which was held March 14 a month after 17 students and staff were killed by a shooter in Parkland, Florida.
“I told my kids on the school walkout, ‘I love you, [but] if you walk out that school, walk out my house,’” he said, adding that his family owns guns, farms, fishes, and hunts. He has also said he is an NRA member.
Mike’s statements have drawn a strong backlash from fans and others who saw it as harmful to causes like the fight against police brutality.
