After a six-month absence, Kim Jong-un's favorite pop queens, the Moranbong band, have been playing sold out concerts in North Korea, with one even attended by the secretive country's leader.
Singing such standards as "O My Motherland Full of Hope," "Our Father," and "We Think of the Marshal Day and Night," the Moranbong band has won critically positive reviews in the country and have been described as "military chic," according to London's
Daily Express.
Each member of the girl band was handpicked by Kim. They often appear wearing white or olive outfits with epaulets, knee-high boots and pleated skirts.

The group took a six-month break before its last string of concerts, stated the Express.
During the concert attended by Kim, the event's host told the audience of the special occasion,
according to The Associated Press.
"The supreme commander spared time to watch the performance though he was very busy with the work to protect the destiny of the country and its people from the arrogant and reckless moves of the U.S. imperialists and other hostile forces to stifle the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)," the concert host told the audience.
Kim Jong Un waved back to the cheering performers and audience and congratulated the artistes on their successful performance.
Moranbong's performances are filled with solos, drumming and mildly suggestive choreography with hints of Western-style pop rock shows, according to the AP.The group played the "Rocky" theme song in one of their early concerts.
The group led by violinist Sonu Hyang Hui and all the women are young, thin and wear skirts cut above the knee, often a fashion no-no on the streets of North Korea.
The New York Daily News reported last May that Kim branded the new band as "promising" in a 2012 report by Korean Central News Agency, North Korea's state-run media.
"(He praised) Seon-u Hyang-hui, leader of the band, for her splendid directing," the report said. "He underscored the need to steadily develop the traditional music and popular music in a balanced manner to suit the thoughts and feelings of Koreans and their aesthetic taste while meeting the need of the times and the people's desire."
