Kim Wall, a missing Swedish journalist, died in an accident aboard a homemade submarine, its owner Peter Madsen said, and then he buried her at sea.
Madsen told authorities there was a malfunction while Wall was aboard the sub that ultimately led to her death, Fox News reported.
“I was toying with various things on the submarine and then an error occurred,” Madsen said, per Fox.
Police said they believe Madsen sunk the submarine on purpose. He was being held on preliminary manslaughter charges.
Wall, 30, had been missing for more than a week. She was last seen with Madsen aboard his submarine as it departed.
According to NBC News, there have been inconsistencies in Madsen's story. At one point, he told investigators he had dropped off Wall from his submarine. The 47-year-old later changed that story.
The Danish Navy was alerted and rescued Madsen. The submarine was recovered and searched thoroughly. There was no sign of Wall.
Wall's family recently issued remarks about her death, saying the journalist worked in dangerous conditions many times before, but that they never would have imagined that "something could happen" like this given how close she was to home.
