Kirk Cameron became a teen phenomenon when he played Mike Seaver on ABC’s “Growing Pains” from 1985 to 1992. It was during the last seasons of the show that he met his future wife, Chelsea Noble, who played the part of his girlfriend.

Cameron stands apart from many celebrities in Hollywood because he is a conservative and active evangelical Christian. His strong religious beliefs have led him to take part in Christian-themed films, including the “Left Behind” series, which deals with the world after the rapture upon the Second Coming of Christ.

Here are five things you might not know about Kirk Cameron.

1. He has four adopted children — Along with his two biological children, Olivia Rose and James Thomas, Kirk and Chelsea also adopted four children: Jack, Isabella, Anna, and Luke, according to Movieguide.

2. He didn’t grow up in a Christian home and was once an atheist — It wasn’t until age 17 that Kirk developed a close relationship with God. But then a friend invited him to church and that led to his conversion. He later co-founded The Way of the Master, an evangelical ministry, with evangelist Ray Comfort.

3. His sister has her own ministry — Candace Cameron Bure also lacked a religious background and became a Christian at age 12. She played D. J. Tanner on TV’s “Full House” and is also a producer along with her ministry, The Christian Post reported.

4. He has a retreat for terminally ill children — The camp began while he was still starring in “Growing Pains.” He and his family were meeting many children through the Make-A-Wish Foundation who wanted an autograph. “My wife and I wanted to do something more for them than just sign a piece of paper and take a picture,” Cameron said, according to the Christian Post. So Camp Firefly was born.

5. He doesn’t care if his conservative and Christian beliefs have cost him roles in Hollywood — “You have to be true to your higher values,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “As an actor, you’re playing someone other than who you are, but as a human being, you need to be who you are.” He is content with the fact that some people share his views and others don’t.
