Kirk Douglas Obituary in People Has a Big Error – He Ain't Dead

By    |   Monday, 01 December 2014 08:30 AM EST

Kirk Douglas has died . . . this, according to an advance obituary that somehow got published on People magazine's website over the weekend.

It's not yet clear how the People obit for the 97-year-old screen legend and World War II veteran leaked, but sources say the father of actor Michael Douglas is still very much alive.

The premature death notice lists "TK" (journalistic shorthand for "to come") in place of the death date, and is inexplicably timestamped September 29, 2014.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that it's not uncommon for major news outlets to have pre-written obituaries ready to go for notable figures.

Still, the false announcement quickly circulated on social media, with many Twitter users criticizing the magazine.

The obituary was removed from People's website Sunday night, though no explanation has been offered as to how it was published in the first place.
