The show is about bankrupt theater producer Oscar Jaffe, played by Gallagher, who gets on the Twentieth Century train to convince his former lover and Hollywood star Lily Garland to star in his next production. In the midst of their entertaining antics on board the train, Jaffe is desperate to save his career.
“On the Twentieth Century” premiered on Broadway in 1978 and Madeline Kahn originally played the role Chenoweth will take on.
Chenoweth has a successful Broadway history, winning a Tony for “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and starring in “Wicked.” She was in “Promises, Promises.”
The popular actress and singer performed at Carnegie Hall May 3 in “The Evolution of a Soprano,” singing songs from throughout her career in the two-hour show.
“I look at roles that have opportunity for growth, just for me as an artist to get better and to build a really great character arc,”
Chenoweth told NYCastings recently. “I continue to look for roles that will challenge me and make me a better actress. A lot of people can sing, and sing really well, but I really am all about the role and becoming the character.”
Chenoweth also shared with NYCastings the best vocal advice she’s received: “Rest, don’t talk, rest.”
