Kylie Jenner’s new cornrows have sparked a feud with "Hunger Games" actress Amandla Stenberg, who accused the 17-year-old of appropriating black culture.
Jenner, the daughter of Bruce Jenner — now known as Caitlyn Jenner — and Kris Jenner, posted a photo to Instagram of her new
hairstyle on Saturday, Hollywood Life reported.
Stenberg, a 16-year-old known for her role as Rue in “The Hunger Games,” responded to the post, bashing Jenner, who is Caucasian, for having a hairstyle that Stenberg does not appear to believe is white.
According to The Washington Post, Stenberg posted, “When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur (sic) position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter.”
In response, Jenner gave a stiff reply: “Mad if I don’t, Mad if I don’t . . . Go hang w (sic) Jaden or something,” referring to Jaden Smith, the son of Will Smith who accompanied Stenberg to prom in May and who was reportedly involved with Jenner last year.
Though she appeared to publicly brush off Stenberg's comments, a source told Hollywood Life that Jenner was actually “horrified."
The source added that the teen would have preferred the incident to have occurred in private.
“[Jenner] didn’t mean any disrespect to African American culture by braiding her hair in cornrows and thinks it’s a fashion that suits her given her own dark complexion,” the insider said. “She feels it’s an unprovoked attack.”
Stenberg posted a long response on Twitter about black femininity.
“Bigger than you or me. Discussions are healthy. Ignorance is not,” she wrote.
The post also made reference to lip plumping following the “Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge,” which encouraged women to enhance the size of their lips to resemble Jenner’s cosmetically enhanced ones.
Stenberg has discussed racial issues many times. She recently appeared in an educational video called “Don’t Crop My Cornrows,” which discussed the popularity of racial culture.
Stenberg has called out other celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift for their use of African American culture in music videos as well.
Actress Zendaya wore her hair in dreaded cornrows to the Oscars in February, and E!’s “Fashion Police” co-host Giuliana Rancic said she smelled like “patchouli oil or weed.”
Rancic came under fire for her comments, and she later made an on-air apology. A few months later,
People magazine reported that she announced that she would be stepping down from being a host of “E! News,” but would stay on “Fashion Police” and “Live from the Red Carpet" specials.
Co-host Kelly Osbourne, however, quit the show following the incident.
