Prior to his fatal run-in with police, Zion had also stabbed both his mother and a roommate with a knife,
the Los Angeles Times reported.
"At some point during the course of the response, one of the deputies was stabbed by the suspect, and in turn, another deputy shot and fatally wounded the suspect," Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff's Department told KABC-TV.
According to residents, the Laguna Niguel community of Chandon at Marina Hills condominium is known for being a typically calm, quiet neighborhood, though witnesses say it erupted shortly after police arrived.
"We just heard some police come in with their tires screeching and everything, then we heard a little bit of yelling after that, and then a whole [magazine] go off of the bullets, one after another, nonstop,"
resident Yobani Salas told KABC-TV.
The injuries that the sheriff deputy sustained were described as non-life threatening,
the International Business Times reported.
The extent of the injuries that Zion's mother and his roommate suffered was not released, according to the Los Angeles Times. Both victims were immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
What triggered Zion's apparent rampage is still unclear.
The Orange County district attorney’s office is conducting an investigation into the matter.
