Photos and videos of lake-effect snow in New York and Michigan are taking the Internet by storm.
Tuesday’s storm, which dropped as much as 6 feet of snow in some areas, canceled flights at Buffalo/Niagrara International Airport in New York and Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
YouTube user Alfonzo Cutaia posted a time-lapse video of Lake Erie that had received more than 1.2 million views on Wednesday afternoon.
A similar video posted by TheWeeShow was being shared on news sites and Twitter.
Videos of people “blizzard surfing” on Lake Erie during the blizzard also went viral.
CNN invited viewers to share images of the storm, with one caveat: “if you can safely.”
Buffalo, New York, was one of the hardest hit areas, and a ban on driving was in place in South Buffalo.
Erie County executive Mark Poloncarz told CNN that the total snowfall, which could reach more than 7 1/2 feet after a second round hits this week, amounts to more than a year’s worth of snow.
"It's probably heavier than anything that we have seen in over 40 years, so it's going to take some time to dig out," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said, according to CNN.
Photos of the snowfall were all over Twitter.
