Lara Logan Apologizes for '60 Minutes' Benghazi Report

CBS reporter Laura Logan apologized Friday for an inaccurate “60 Minutes” report about the Benghazi, Libya, attack that killed four Americans.

"The most important thing to every person at '60 Minutes' is the truth, and today, the truth is that we made a mistake," Logan told "CBS This Morning." "That’s very disappointing for any journalist. That’s very disappointing for me."

The "60 Minutes" report that aired Oct. 27 cited a source using the pseudonym of Morgan Jones, who was later determined to be Dylan Davies, a State Department employee working in security in Libya, CNN reported. When he was interviewed, Davies told Logan he was able to reach the compound under attack and even climb a wall to enter it.

The "60 Minutes" report raised issues about how President Obama’s administration responded, CNN said, and was even cited by Republicans criticizing whether everything was done to help the Americans who died.

On “CBS This Morning,” Logan said that after the show aired, the show personnel became aware of an incident report that said things happened differently than what Davies reported.

“He said that he told the FBI the same story that he told us, but what we now know is that he told the FBI a different story,” she said. “That was the moment for us when we realized that we no longer had confidence in our source and that we were wrong to put him on air, and we apologize to our viewers.”

The discrepancy between what Davies told “60 Minutes” and the FBI is a big one. CNN said senior officials reported that the security contractor told the FBI he never made it to the compound.

Davies is co-author of a recent book about Benghazi, published by Threshold Editions, “The Embassy House: The Explosive Eyewitness Account of the Libyan Embassy Siege by the Soldier Who Was There.”

“Although we have not seen the FBI report, in light of these revelations we will review the book and take appropriate action with regard to its publication status,” a spokesperson for Threshold told CNN.
