Leah Remini Dishes on Scientology Departure and Upcoming Reality Show

Leah Remini Dishes on Scientology Departure and Upcoming Reality Show

By    |   Thursday, 29 May 2014 07:19 AM EDT

Leah Remini opened up this week about her infamous departure from Scientology, saying that her decision to leave the church has strengthened her family and even brought her new business ventures, like an upcoming TLC reality show.

The former "King of Queens" star, 43, split with the Church of Scientology last year, reportedly after questioning higher-ups in the cult-like religion about their use of interrogation and thought modification on members.

The departure then led to public feud between Remini, who participated later that year in ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," and Scientologist actress Kristie Alley.

But now that the controversy has subsided, Remini said she is looking forward to the next chapter of her life — a reality show that will include the actress' husband, Angelo Pagan, her parents, and her 9-year-old daughter Sofia, according to E! Online.

"We're learning new ways to reconnect with each other," Remini said of her family on "The Ellen DeGeneres" show this week. "It really has brought us closer together. We're stronger and we're having so much fun together. This is something that the family loves to do. At first, I was like I don't need 25 people at my house every day. My stepfather and my mother they love it."

Remini said her efforts to produce other shows led her to realize she had the perfect family for a reality show.

"I was pitching other people's show," she told DeGeneres. "After a while my agent said why don't you just do a reality show about yourself because you seem pretty crazy. I said, 'Ah, I guess we are. Maybe I should.' That's how it started."

Remini also joked with her mother, Vicki, who was sitting in the "Ellen" audience, teasing her about getting a tattoo on-camera for the reality show.

"Can you imagine your mother saying she wanted a tramp stamp?" Remini said to DeGeneres. "Can you imagine at a Bar Mitzvah, her pulling down her Hanes grandma underwear to show this?"

She said jokingly that her mother hopes to get her own show from the reality gig.

"My mother thinks she's a star anyway," Remini said. "She thinks she's pretty genius. From this, she keeps saying things like 'I think I'm going to get my own sitcom deal.' She's thinks she's that hysterical. Sofia, my daughter, doesn't love it. She's in negotiations with TLC right now. She's considering continuing if she gets a Chanel purse. She has a whole list of things."
