Lebron James showing up in suit shorts for Game 1 of the NBA finals on Thursday proved to be an embarrassing air ball on Twitter as users flooded the social media site with posts and memes mocking his unusual attire, and what suspiciously looked like a purse.

James poured in 51 points as his Cleveland Cavaliers lost to the Golden State Warriors in overtime in Oakland, but those heroics may be overshadowed by the now-infamous suit shorts, Yard Barker reported.

From being compared to rock band AC/DC's guitarist Angus Young, who is notorious for sporting short shorts on stage, to having every detail of his outfit scrutinized, James fielded massive backlash.

So, what is the story behind the suit shorts? Is there even a story behind the shorts?

According to USA Today, there was more to it than meets the eye.

When it comes to postseason road games, Cavs players have often worn Thom Browne designed suits, and the designer is known for creating and wearing suits with shorts.

In fact, Cavs coach Ty Lue said the whole thing "shows a sign of unity, as one, everyone wearing the same suits," USA Today noted.

"I mean, it's pretty cool. Like at first, when we lost our first game, we did it, and I knew it would be a story. But overall, it just stands for unity, like as one, going on the floor, having the same jersey and uniform on. I think it's pretty cool."

Thursday's game was the fourth consecutive year that the Cavs and Warriors faced each other in the NBA finals. Last year the Warriors won their second NBA championship in three seasons with a 129-120 Game Five win over the Cavs.
