LEGO 'Ghostbusters' Special Set To Mark Movie's 30th Birthday

By    |   Friday, 31 January 2014 01:27 PM EST

LEGO will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the hit movie "Ghostbusters" with a special set of its unique plastic shapes depicting the motion picture's characters and the paranormal-exterminating vehicle.

The design is in development and is expected to be released later this year, according to Digital Spy.com. The set will feature a model of the Ecto-1 vehicle as well, according to the website.

"Pitched to the Cuusoo program by Brent Waller, the 'Ghostbusters' 30th anniversary set will be modified for its official release," said Chris Sims of Comic Alliance.com. "Hopefully, they'll fix the one flaw, which is a crucial lack of Janine Melnitz — although I'll admit that the Glow-In-The-Dark Slimer is a pretty awesome touch."

Starburst.com reported that Waller, a 3D artist and video game designer, created the "Ghostbuster" fan proposal for LEGO that included a fire station as the team's home base, but the building does not seem to be included in the company's final design.

The original "Ghostbusters" was a movie vehicle for original "Saturday Night Live" Not Ready for Prime Time Players Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. The movie also starred Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigorney Weaver, per IMDb.com.

The movie was nominated for best song and special effect Oscars, and led to a sequel in 1989.

"Ghostbusters" earned $238.6 million at the box office in 1984 was the second top grossing movie that year behind Eddie Murphy's "Beverly Hills Cop." The movie went on to make another $53 million overseas, per Box Office Mojo.com.

"Ghostbusters II" did considerably less, bring in $112.4 million domestically and $102.9 million overseas, ranking No. 7 in 1989 during a year that included several sequels, including "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," "Lethal Weapon 2" and "Back to the Future 2."

Rumors about a third Ghostbusters movie have been around for years. Aykroyd told Esquire magazine in 2012 that a script has been hammered out for it sequel.

"I've worked on every draft in the last three years, as Ivan (Reitman) has, and now we have a story and a draft that everybody seems to agree would make the third movie," Aykroyd said in the Esquire article. "At this point, I think we're closer than we ever have been."
