Police arrested a 39-year-old Georgia man in connection to a false threat of a sniper near the Lincoln Tunnel, which snarled rush-hour traffic on Tuesday.

Donald Wallace was taken into custody in Manhattan just before midnight, Fox New York reported.

He was being transported to New Jersey to face charges, including making terroristic threats and creating false public alarm, the station reported.

The Port Authority shut down the tunnel on Tuesday after a 911 caller said a sniper was on the roof of a building that overlooks the tunnel entrance.

The 911 call, traced to a cell phone near the tunnel, included the warnings "the DC sniper is here in your city" and "get your hospitals ready," according to NBC New York.

Law enforcement officials with rifles drawn stopped a nearby light rail train during their search.

Fear spread on Twitter as the event unfolded.

CBC New York posted a video of the disturbance to its YouTube channel.
