Ski champ Lindsey Vonn had to settle for a bronze medal in Tuesday's World Championships super-G, her first major championship medal in four years and her sixth overall.
Vonn, who suffered a crash in the 2013 event which led to two leg surgeries and was sidelined for the Sochi Winter Olympics, was favored for a comeback this year,
NBC reported.
She held the lead for part of the event, but ultimately finished 0.15 seconds behind Anna Fenninger of Austria and Tina Maze of Slovenia.
"I thought I skied pretty well," Vonn
told reporters from The Associated Press. "I'm happy with the way I skied. I'm happy with the result. I just wish the weather was a little bit better."
Vonn's boyfriend, golfer Tiger Woods, watched the event live alongside her cheering fans. He has been supportive of her events in general, having recently flown to Italy to see her compete. There, he said he lost a tooth when a camera operator accidentally hit him in the face, but was able to get it repaired upon returning home to Florida.
Fenninger said she was happy Vonn snagged a medal in the event.
"Here, they know who Lindsey Vonn is and watch her and they are watching us, too," Fenninger said. "We have more promotion and it's very important for our sport."
The downhill event is scheduled for Friday, and Vonn is expected to make a strong showing.
