A revolutionary Compact Fusion Reactor (CFR) developed by Lockheed Martin stands to transform the world's energy needs, according to BESA (The Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies).
Lockheed Martin registered a patent for "a mobile device small enough to be mounted on a truck," which could produce produce 100 megawatts. That would be enough to power a city of 100,000 people, according to BESA.
The CFR would also provide clean energy without radioactive waste, something that would be desirable for use in both the U.S. military and the public.
"In principle, it can be installed on large aircraft carriers, submarines, large transport planes, and probably also fighter jets and large drones," BESA reported. "If Lockheed Martin's hopes are realized, the fear of global energy scarcity will become a thing of the past, and mankind will have the benefit of an environment unsullied by energy pollution."
Development started in 2010 and the goal is to have a working device in five years and produce it commercially in 10, according to the report.
