Logging Truck Wreck Kills 2, Injures 19 on Bridge in Arkansas

By    |   Tuesday, 03 June 2014 08:08 AM EDT

Two people were killed and 19 others injured when the brakes on a logging truck failed, causing it to overturn and spill its cargo onto a crew of more than two dozen construction workers on a bridge in north Arkansas.

Van Buren County Sheriff Scott Bradley said the wreck occurred Monday afternoon on a U.S. 65 bridge in Clinton, about 70 miles north of Little Rock. Bradley said the logging truck's brakes apparently failed, causing the wreck.

Authorities said the driver of the logging truck suffered minor injuries.

The crews were working on a construction project to widen the bridge from three lanes to five, according to The Associated Press.

Ozark Health Medical Center administrator David Deaton said his hospital treated 19 people injured. Deaton old the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that 12 of those had "major injuries."
