Amazon has acquired the global television rights to “The Lord of the Rings” and will produce a multi-season streaming TV show for its channel, the company announced Monday.

The estate of author J.R.R. Tolkien and HarperCollins both said the series will focus on stories outside the ones already made into movie trilogies “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit.”

The new series could feature characters and stories from Tolkien’s other writings, or could create new characters not found in Tolkien’s body of work that would use the Middle Earth setting, Ars Technica reported.

"'The Lord of the Rings' is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen," Amazon Scripted Series Chief Sharon Tal Yguado said, USA Today reported. “We ... are thrilled to be taking 'The Lord of the Rings' fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth."

Tolkien estate representative Matt Galsor called the ideas for the series "exceptional," USA Today reported.

Variety reported in September that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos was dissatisfied with Amazon Prime original programming to date and was looking for Amazon’s “Game of Thrones,” a highly rated original show currently on HBO.

Amazon has experienced a shakeup of its programming leadership with the recent dismissal of head of programing Roy Price after sexual harassment allegations.

Twitter users were excited and shocked to hear the news about the new "Lord of the Rings" on Amazon.
