Loretta Lynn broke her hip after falling at home and landed in the hospital on New Year’s Day. Though family members said the 85-year-old country legend was in good spirits, such fractures are the bane of elderly women.
“At my mom’s age it’s so dangerous when it comes to the hip, so we’re all just grateful she seems to be okay,” the singer’s daughter, Patsy Lynn, told People magazine, adding that her mother was able to put some weight onto her hip and was starting rehab for the injury.
Even for women 80 and older who are in excellent health, and Loretta Lynn is not, a hip fracture nearly triples the risk of dying within a year, according to a Kaiser Permanente study, which especially recommended a home assessment to make sure homes are fall proof.
Her family had jokingly blamed Loretta Lynn’s new puppy for the fall.
“She has a new puppy — we don’t really know if she was chasing after the puppy or what, but she slid and fractured her hip. We blame the puppy!” Patsy Lynn told People adding that, on a serious note, the puppy did bring smiles to all.
A post to Loretta Lynn’s official Instagram account confirmed that the singer was doing well and her sister, Crystal Gayle, said the music icon was “in good spirits and is doing as well as can be expected with this type of injury,” the New York Daily News reported.
Loretta Lynn has suffered a series of recent health setbacks, including a stroke in May 2017, so news of her fall sent ripples of concern across the music industry.
Patsy Lynn told People that her mother was admittedly feeling “aggravated because she was recovering so well and getting around” but now this injury was another setback.
“She said she’s just mad about being back to laying up watching TV! Hopefully, she will recover quickly. She’s strong — it’s amazing she’s able to go through all she’s been through.”
