Louise Linton, the newlywed wife of Treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin, found herself tied up in a social media controversy Monday after a post and response on Instagram that some called condescending.
Linton, 36, the Scottish-born actress who married Mnuchin in June, posted a photo on Instagram of her leaving a military plane after she accompanied her husband on a trip to Kentucky with Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, The New York Times reported.
On her Instagram account, which has been turned to private, she added a caption to the photo that included hashtags for her wardrobe, the Times noted.
"Great #daytrip to #Kentucky! #rolandmouret, #hermesscarf, #tomford and #valentino," Linton reportedly wrote in the caption, according to the newspaper.
One Instagram reader Jenni Miller, 45, of Portland, Oregon, responded negatively to her post, writing, "Glad we could pay for your little getaway. #deplorable," the Times said.
That is when Linton shot back with a lengthy response.
"@jennimiller29 cute! Aw!!! Did you think this was a personal trip?! Adorable," Linton responded, according to CNN. "Do you think the US govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?! Lololol. Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband?
"Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice to your country? I'm pretty sure we paid more taxes toward our day 'trip' than you did. Pretty sure the amount we sacrifice per year is a lot more than you'd be willing to sacrifice if the choice was yours," Linton continued.
Linton went on to call Miller "adorably out of touch" and add that her "life looks cute," CNN reported.
CNN's Betsy Klein posted on Twitter that Linton eventually deleted the Instagram post altogether along with the comments.
